Challenge

The website was ranked 52nd among similar state transportation sites. It had a poor UI with a no-info spinner, wasteful long text filling critical info space, and did not serve the community for traffic, travel, and transportation information as intended.

Process

I produced a well-documented proposal with national and global research on similar sites, used OOUX techniques to surface the most important content categories, and created initial concepts for review — including mockups of a super search and a variable homepage where users could choose their own content priorities.

Impact

The research and prototype were well received. However, the client's main concern was reusing available components from their previous site, which limited the scope of responsive, citizen-centered redesign I had envisioned.

Reflections

As a competitive effort, I couldn't get as much internal context as I would have on a full team engagement. I learned a great deal about government web design and remain eager to apply those insights in future civic UX work.
